Treatments
Tooth extraction
Removing a tooth when it cannot be kept, or when it is pressing on the teeth around it. Carried out under local anaesthetic, usually in a single visit.
Who it is considered for
- A tooth damaged beyond what a restoration can hold
- Infection or an abscess that has not settled with treatment
- An impacted wisdom tooth, or one crowding its neighbours
- Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
- Making room before orthodontic treatment
How the treatment works
- 1
Examination and imaging
An X-ray to see the shape of the roots and where they sit relative to the nerve and sinus.
- 2
Local anaesthetic
The area is numbed before any work begins.
- 3
The extraction
The tooth is loosened and removed. An impacted tooth may need surgical access and sometimes stitches.
- 4
Healing instructions
How to look after the socket in the first few days, and what to do if something is not as described.
- 5
Planning what follows
If the tooth is visible when you smile or carries chewing load, we discuss the options for replacing it.
What to expect
- Swelling and discomfort in the following days are common
- Vigorous rinsing and smoking are best avoided while the socket heals
- The socket closes gradually over several weeks
- An impacted wisdom tooth is a longer procedure than a routine extraction
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about this treatment
Can I go back to work straight away?
It depends on the extraction and on your work. After a simple extraction many people carry on with the day; after a surgical one it is worth planning a rest day.
What happens after a tooth is removed?
An extracted tooth can be replaced by an implant, a bridge or a partial denture. Which suits depends on the position of the tooth, the state of the bone and other factors we go through together.
Do wisdom teeth always have to come out?
No. A wisdom tooth that has come through fully, can be cleaned and is not pressing on its neighbours needs nothing done. Extraction is considered when there are symptoms or a finding on the X-ray.
